For our money, Wastwater is the best lake, if not area in the Lake District.
On paper it sounds pretty good; Englands deepest glacial lake surrounded by towering mountain including Scafell Pike, Englands highest peak. But we found the reality even better, see the lake is on the west of the National Park, not too far from the coast and therefore slightly off the beaten track and there was something about just being there that felt adventurous.
If you're short on time just a drive along its west shoreline is a spectacular experience, taking in the views, stopping in the lay-bys to photograph the landspace and eventually working your way along to the foot of Scafell Pike.
But if you have the luxury of more time there are tonnes of hiking route through the surrounding mountains and you can even hire bikes and paddle-boards from the nearby village of Gosforth (Details in link below).
Pro Tips: There is now a summer shuttle bus that connects Wastwater to the rest of the National Park.
