Feed reindeer, ride a sleigh, and discover Arctic Indigenous culture
This is one of Tromsø’s most family-friendly and magical activities—combining hands-on encounters with reindeer, a sleigh ride through snowy landscapes, and a deep dive into Sámi culture. If you’re staying in Tromsø without a car, it’s also very easy to join, with transport included from the city center.
The Experience
You’ll be picked up from Tromsø and taken on a short seaside drive to a reindeer camp, home to a herd of around 300 animals. After being welcomed by your Sámi hosts, you’ll:
Hand-feed the reindeer—a fun and unforgettable highlight.
Enjoy a short reindeer sleigh ride across the snow.
Step inside a warm lavvu (Sámi tent) to gather around the fire.
Savor a traditional hot meal (reindeer stew bidos or vegetarian option).
Listen to stories and joik (traditional Sámi singing), gaining insight into Indigenous life and traditions in Arctic Norway.
The mix of wildlife, food, and cultural storytelling makes it a rich experience for adults and kids alike.

Our Take
This was one of the most authentic experiences of our Tromsø trip. Feeding the reindeer feels magical, but what really makes the day special is the chance to sit with Sámi guides, hear their personal stories, and enjoy their traditions firsthand. It’s not just a “tour”—it’s a cultural exchange wrapped in Arctic snow.
