Ponte Sant'Angelo is an ancient bridge that spans the Tiber River. It was commissioned by Emperor Hadrian and built in 136 AD to provide access to his mausoleum (now called Castel Sant' Angelo). The bridge has five arches. The middle three arches are original from the 2nd century.

This pedestrian bridge can get quite crowded during the day. But if you come as the sun rises first thing in the morning, you’ll get a tranquil view across the span of Castel Sant’ Angelo. Also, I recommend visiting it at sunset, when the last rays of the sun are reflected in the water of the Tiber River.

The bridge is famous for the 10 angels that line the span from the 17th century. Bernini designed all 10 angels, but the renowned sculptor only made two himself. His students made the rest.

HOURS: Always open, free to visit.
