St. Peter's Basilica is one of the most impressive churches in the world. Michelangelo and Bernini contributed to its design, which took over 100 years to build.

It is the largest church in the world, and as you walk along the center aisle, you can see brass markers on the marble floor noting the size of some of the world's other important churches.

The basilica's walls appear to be covered with paintings, but they are all mosaics.

You'll also see the spectacular bronze canopy near the front, "the Baldacchino," designed by Bernini. The bronze used to create it was taken from the porch roof of the ancient Pantheon.

There are many statues inside the basilica, but one of the most famous is La Pietà, which was carved by a 23-year-old Michelangelo. It's to the right when you first enter.

HOURS: April to September: 7:00 am to 7:10 pm and October to March: 7:00 am to 7:10 pm. Closed Wednesday mornings for the papal audience.

COST: Free, but need to pass through security. Expect LONG lines.

BEST WAY TO VISIT: Do a combo skip-the-line tour that includes St. Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums. You'll be whisked through a separate entrance and avoid the line-up.

DRESS CODE: The Vatican has a mandatory dress code: knees and shoulders must be covered.
