The incredible landscape at Saint Bathans is formed by remnants of a historic gold mining pit. Saint Bathans is a unique small township, a destination well off the beaten track. The crystal clear blue freshwater lake, surrounded by white, rocky cliffs create a dramatic otherworldly scene. In summer, the landscape is green and lush, while in winter it is a golden brown tussock - beautiful whatever time of year! There are several walking tracks around the lake.

The small town still contains old heritage buildings from its historic gold-rush days. The iconic Vulcan Hotel is one of New Zealand’s oldest pubs. One of its hotel rooms is said to be haunted.

Remember: The cliffs are fragile, stay on marked paths.

Personal tip: Spend a day or two here, relax, wind-down and enjoy the sleepy countryside and beautiful scenery.
