In the Catlins region, the stunning Purakaunui Falls are a favourite among landscape photographers. The tiered waterfall cascades over the rock face and is easily accessed by a short walking track through native bush. There is also a viewing platform at the base of the falls. Purakaunui Falls are one of the most spectacular falls in the area.

Remember: The track can be slippery, particularly after rain, so wear appropriate footwear and be cautious.

Personal tip: If you are a photographer, visit on an overcast day or during dusk or dawn to get the best images. The midday sun can be harsh through the forest canopy.

Pronunciation: Purakaunui: poo-raa-koe-noo-ee
