The geography of Kaikōura is incredibly unique as there is a deep underwater canyon a short distance from the coastline. This makes Kaikōura an amazing feeding location for so many marine mammals, and it offers incredible wildlife encounters.

Sperm whales can be seen at Kaikōura all year round, as they feed in the local area. From a plane or from a boat, you can see these gentle giants as they surface for oxygen before diving deep to feed again. You will also encounter giant pods of dolphins, and possibly orca, humpbacks and other whale species, sea mammals, depending on the time of year.

Remember: You are observing wildlife in their natural habitat, always be respectful and travel responsibly.

Personal tip: There are tour options for everyone, from a gentle whale watching cruise, to swimming with dolphins or kayaking with seals, there are some great opportunities! Do one encounter, or do them all! We have done whale watching flight with Wings Over Whales (linked below) and loved it.
