This incredible geological formation is a popular destination for photographers and Lord of the Rings fans. You may recognise the Putaringa Pinnacles as the location of Dimholt Road in LOTR. These spectacular cliffs were formed over years of erosion, creating steep gullies, towers and spires that are awesome to walk amongst.

The pinnacles are accessed from the Putangirua campsite via a streambed. There is no marked track and it is a rugged route, so wear appropriate footwear.

Remember: Access has recently been closed due to a slip. Check the DOC website for up-to-date information. Do not attempt any stream crossings after heavy rain.

Personal tip: The track is exposed to the elements, make sure you take plenty of water and/or a sunhat and raincoat!

Pronunciation: Putangirua: poo-taa-ngee-roo-aa
