Stawamus Chief (“The Chief”) – Stawamus Chief Provincial Park, BC

The Stawamus Chief is an iconic granite monolith towering over Squamish and Howe Sound. With three distinct summit peaks, short technical sections, and panoramic views, it’s one of BC’s most famous day-hikes. 📸 Photos from the summit reveal sparkling coastal waters, the townscape below, and sweeping mountain vistas.

Trail Options:

  • First Peak (South Summit): ~4 km round trip, ~535 m gain (~3–4 hrs)

  • Second Peak (Centre Summit): ~5 km RT, ~580 m gain (~4–5 hrs)

  • Third Peak (North Summit): ~7 km RT, ~627 m gain (~5–7 hrs)

Total Route: ~11 km RT if you summit all three (~600 m net gain, ~900 m cumulative)

Trailhead & Route:
Located off Mamquam FSR near the Sea‑to‑Sky Highway, the trail ascends steeply via forested switchbacks. Above tree line, expect granite rock slabs with fixed chains and ladders facilitating the ascent to each peak .

Highlights & Photo Spots:

  • First and Second Peaks: Dramatic views into Howe Sound and Squamish—especially from rock ledges and summit slabs.

  • Third Peak: Offers the highest vantage (≈702 m), revealing wider coastal and mountain panoramas .

Camping & Permits:

  • Front-country camping is available at a walk-in campground (~47 sites, $10/person/night) adjacent to the trailhead—no reservation required .

  • No backcountry camping is permitted.

  • Day-use vehicle pass: Not required for The Chief in summer 2025 .

Seasonal Notes & Tips:

  • Best time: March–November—summer to fall offer the most stable and snow-free conditions

  • In winter, micro-spikes or traction devices are advised—slippery sections above the treeline are common

  • The trail includes fixed chains and ladders—comfortable footwear and basic scrambling experience are recommended.

Gear Essentials:

  • Hiking shoes with firm grip; trekking poles helpful for approach.

  • Daypack with water (minimum 2 L), snacks, sun/rain layers.

  • In cooler months, traction device and insulated layers are strongly advised.
