First Pump Peak / Pump Peak – Mount Seymour Provincial Park, BC

First Pump Peak (also just “Pump Peak”) is the first summit on the popular Mount Seymour ridge sequence. It offers a quick taste of alpine exposure and expansive views in a shorter outing than the full Seymour summit—perfect for a half-day adventure or a scenic winter snowshoe. 📸 The summit ridge provides views over Vancouver, Indian Arm, and the Cascade foothills beyond.

Distance: ~7 km round-trip
Elevation Gain: ~480 m
Route Type: Out & back (First Pump side trip en route to Mount Seymour)

Trailhead & Route:
Start from the Mount Seymour ski area parking lot. Follow the Mount Seymour Trail uphill, passing Brockton Point and several sub-peaks. At about 3 km, take the signed junction for “First Pump Peak.” A short scramble takes you to the rounded summit, often capped in snow for much of the year.

Highlights & Photo Spots:

  • Brockton Point: early viewpoint overlooking the ski terrain and the valley.

  • Pump Peak summit: panoramic views across Vancouver, the North Shore Mountains, Indian Arm, and distant ranges.

Camping & Permits:
No backcountry camping allowed on Pump Peak itself. However, Mount Seymour Provincial Park requires a free day-use vehicle pass on weekends, holidays, and the winter season. No overnight permits are needed—day hikes only.

Seasonal Notes & Tips:

  • Best Time: Year-round; summer access July–October, snowshoeing in winter (Dec–Mar).

  • In winter or early spring, bring micro-spikes or snowshoes—trail is well marked with poles.

  • Avalanche risk exists beyond First Pump—stay on maintained route if unfamiliar.

Gear Essentials:

  • In non-winter conditions: sturdy hiking shoes and poles.

  • In winter: snowshoes or micro-spikes, insulated layers, and avalanche awareness gear if venturing further.

  • Water, snacks, and a headlamp — parking enforcement can begin early at the lot.
