The listed elevation gain can be intimidating but the absolute gain is 620m over the first 6km and the grade is mild. After that you are cruising along the hills with some gentle elevation loss and gain. This would be a great trail run, as this trail is more about the distance and beautiful views than about the steepness. The Elfin Lakes and Rampart Ponds backcountry campgrounds are great for making this into a multi-day trip. Between October and April, tire chains are mandatory on the access road. If the road is clear, it is still required to have tire chains available in the vehicle
