Cheam Peak – Chilliwack Valley, BC

Cheam Peak (also known locally as Mount Cheam) is an iconic pyramidal summit in the Cheam Range, offering jaw-dropping panoramic views of the Fraser Valley, North Cascades, and its dramatic neighboring peaks, including Lady Peak. It’s a steep but straightforward day-hike for those with trail experience. 📸 Best photos are from the summit ledge and alpine meadows, especially at sunrise or late afternoon light.

Time Required: ~4–5 hours

Trailhead & Route:
The hike starts at the end of Chipmunk Creek FSR, reached via ~11 km of rough gravel — a high-clearance 4×4 is needed From the parking area, the trail begins with a flat section across alpine meadows, offering early glimpses of Mount Baker and Lady Peak . It then steepens through switchbacks and gains elevation steadily until it reaches the rocky summit ridge at ~2,112 m .

Highlights & Photo Spots:

  • Alpine meadows early on provide wildflower vistas in summer—great foreground for peak shots.

  • Summit ridge offers 360° views: look north to the Fraser Valley, east to Mount Baker, south to Lady Peak, and west to Jones and Christina Lakes.

  • A good wildflower trail in the summer

Camping & Permits:

  • Day-use only—no overnight camping is permitted.

  • Dogs allowed on leash; pack out all waste.

  • No park or camping permits required—trail lies outside BC Parks.

  • Spring and autumn may still have snow or icy patches—use micro-spikes and trekking poles.

  • Afternoon thunderstorms can be a concern—start early and bring rain/wind layers.

Gear Essentials:

  • High-clearance vehicle (4×4) for the road to trailhead.

  • Sturdy boots and trekking poles, especially for the steep summit climb.

  • Warm layers and sun protection!

  • Minimum 2 L water, snacks, headlamp, and navigation (map or GPS).
