Slhanay Peak (formerly “Stawamus Squaw”) – Slhanay, Stawamus Chief Provincial Park, BC
Slhanay Peak is a rugged granite dome just north of the iconic Stawamus Chief, offering steep, technical hiking with spectacular views overlooking Squamish, Howe Sound, and the Chief itself—a quieter, alternative summit for experienced hikers. 📸 The best viewpoints include Tony’s Lookout and the summit, both offering stellar perspectives of the Chief and surrounding valleys.
Distance: ~6 km round-trip (lollipop/loop route)
Elevation Gain: ~630 m
Route Type: Lollipop / out & back (with junctions for summit and viewpoints)
Trailhead & Route:
Start along the Mamquam River Forest Service Road (shared with the Chief trailhead). The hike begins steeply through forest and quickly ages into rocky, rugged terrain. After initial climbs, you'll reach a series of lookouts—including one partway up and Tony’s Lookout (~510 m), a polished granite outcrop with benches. A junction leads to the summit (~665 m), which requires careful navigation and an informal, rugged trail. Return loops through rocky slopes reconnect back to the main path.
Highlights & Photo Spots:
Mid-hike viewpoint: clear vista of the Chief and Squamish valley—great for early stops.
Tony’s Lookout: known as one of the best viewpoints—bench and broad outlook over the Chief.
Slhanay Summit: panoramic 360° views of Howe Sound, Squamish, Mamquam Mountain, and the Chief’s north face.

No camping is permitted on Slhanay Peak—day-use only within Stawamus Chief Provincial Park.
