Wahleach Lake (Jones Lake) – Hope/Chilliwack, BC

Wahleach Lake — commonly known as Jones Lake — is a stunning mountain reservoir nestled beneath the Cheam Range. It’s a rustic camper’s paradise, offering crystal-clear waters, sandy beaches, and rugged backcountry vibes just an hour from Chilliwack. 📸 The best shots are from beachside campsites with the Cheam peaks towering overhead.

Distance (Driving):

  • Forest service road access: ~9 km from Highway 1 (via Laidlaw to Jones Creek FSR)

Elevation Gain: • Minimal (mostly road access, flat lakeshore trails)

Route Type:

  • Driving access to campsites; optional hiking routes to Mount Wahleach (~10 km RT, ~900 m gain via unofficial logging roads)

Time Required:

  • Driving + set up: 1.5–2 hrs from Chilliwack

  • Driving & hiking Mount Wahleach: full-day (6–8 hrs round-trip)

Trailhead & Access:

  • Drive east from Chilliwack on Highway 1, turn north onto Laidlaw Road and follow the logging road to the lake.

  • The final stretch is steep, bumpy, and best suited for high-clearance 4×4 vehicles — the first 5 minutes are the toughest .

  • Upon arrival, choose between east and west campgrounds separated by the dam; day-use beach access is also available.

Camping & Facilities:

  • Reservation-free, first-come-first-served with a 14-night stay limit per season .

  • Western and eastern campgrounds have sandy beaches, picnic tables, and outhouses — firepits have been removed due to bans .

  • Bear-safe garbage bins provided, but maintenance can be infrequent — pack out what you pack in .

  • No backcountry permits are needed since the site is outside BC Parks and run by BC Hydro .

Recreation & Highlights:

  • Swimming and kayaking year-round (lake averages 600 m elevation, flanked by mountains) .

  • Mount Wahleach hike: A rugged ascent (~8–10 km round-trip, ~900 m gain) via logging roads and pathless forest leading to alpine ridges with dramatic Cheam Range views.

  • Day hikes or paddles near the dam and shorelines are perfect for families and photographers.

Seasonal Notes & Tips:

  • Best Season: Late spring to early fall. Lake is best for water recreation in summer; early fall offers fewer crowds and peak foliage.

  • Arrive early on summer weekends — campsites can fill quickly, though quieter mid-week and spring/fall .

  • Road conditions vary — drive slow and watch for potholes and washboard sections .

  • No cell reception; pack flashlights/headlamps for night hikes or dusk returns.

Gear Essentials:

  • High-clearance 4×4 vehicle recommended

  • Camping setup: tent, sleeping gear, cooking kit, water (no potable source on site)

  • Swim or paddle gear if planning on being on the water

  • Bear-wise storage and trash management items

  • Basic hiking gear (boots, poles, layers) if attempting Mount Wahleach

  • Trash bags to pack out garbage
