Yak Peak – Coquihalla Recreation Area (near Hope), BC

Yak Peak is a dramatic granite prow towering above the Coquihalla Highway, offering a steep yet incredibly rewarding scramble with stunning panoramic views of the Cascade skyline, the highway below, and Nak Peak. It’s a challenging full-day adventure for experienced hikers seeking alpine exposure and technical terrain. 📸 The summit offers a breathtaking perch above the highway, ideal for bold mountain photos.

Distance: ~12 km round-trip (trailhead from Zopkios rest area, plus highway shoulder access)
Elevation Gain: ~1,200 m
Route Type: Out & back (option to scramble Nak Peak, with extra difficulty)

Trailhead & Route:
Park at the Zopkios rest area on the Coquihalla (accessible off the highway). A short walk along a highway shoulder leads to a cairned trailhead. You’ll gain elevation steeply through forest to a talus slope, then ascend alongside a sheer granite wall—there's a fixed rope to assist one rock step. Above tree-line, follow ledges and rocky ramps to the summit ridge and cairn.

Highlights & Photo Spots:

  • Mid-ascent granite ledges offer dramatic views of the highway and valley below.

  • The summit ridge: a narrow rocky perch with sweeping views toward Nak Peak, the Coquihalla corridor, and glacier-capped ranges beyond.

Camping & Permits:
This is a day-trip only—no camping is permitted. No permits or BC Parks fees are required (it's outside provincial park boundaries).

Season & Tips:

  • Best Time: July to October, when snow is cleared from talus and ledges.

  • Early/late season hikes may require micro-spikes or traction gear - some snow lingers near the summit.

  • Weather can change fast—carry layers, a headlamp, and emergency gear.

Gear Essentials:

  • Mountaineering-style boots with solid grip.

  • Trekking poles for initial slope; gloves useful on exposed granite.

  • GPS or map—trail is rugged and unmarked in sections.

  • At least 3 L water, snacks, sun protection, and a headlamp for added safety.
