Johnston Canyon is a true Banff classic!💦
And for good reason. The trail winds through a narrow canyon with catwalks that take you right over the rushing water below. The real highlight is the Upper Falls though, especially in winter when it freezes into a towering wall of ice. I also think winter is better cause there is farrrrr less crowds and line-ups... Summer can get CRAZY busy here, so get here early to beat the crowds if you come in summer!
The canyon here is also home to a small population of endangered black swifts, which nest in the canyon walls near the waterfalls. If you are lucky enough to spot one, it's one of the few places left in Canada where they’re found. Its a great little trail for everyone - Whether you’re a geology nerd admiring the canyon walls and peeking into the caves, or just watching the waterfalls flow (or freeze) in all their glory.
