This 5-day Extended South Coast itinerary is designed for travelers who want to experience Iceland’s most iconic highlights, including the dramatic Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, within a structured and realistic timeframe.
The route covers the Golden Circle, the waterfall corridor between Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, black sand beaches near Vík, a glacier hike in Skaftafell, and the unforgettable ice-filled lagoon in the east. Overnight locations are carefully positioned to reduce unnecessary backtracking while keeping daily pacing manageable.
This version includes one longer driving day as you travel toward the Glacier Lagoon. That commitment is intentional, and rewarded with one of Iceland’s most breathtaking landscapes.
Best suited for travelers who:
Want to see as much of the South Coast as possible in five days
Are comfortable with moderate to longer driving distances
Prefer a linear progression rather than basing in one area
Designed for early arrivals and afternoon departures.
Early Arrival Option – Start Exploring Immediately
If you arrive early in the morning (before 8:00 AM) and feel ready to start driving, you can skip the Reykjavík arrival day and begin the Golden Circle immediately.
In this case:
• Move the Golden Circle from Day 2 to Day 1
• Stay in the Hella / Hvolsvöllur / Skógar area that evening
• Shift the rest of the itinerary forward by one day
You can then explore Reykjavík later in the trip, either on the evening of Day 4 or briefly on Day 5 before departure, depending on your flight time.
This option works well for travelers who prefer maximizing sightseeing from the moment they land and are comfortable starting with a full day of driving.
