The reservoir was created in the early 20th century to supply water to San Francisco, which sparked quite a bit of controversy over the years, as many believed it should have been preserved as a natural wonder instead of being dammed. There are several hikes that can be done around the reservoir, but it is recommended to do these in cooler months as the trail is fairly exposed.
