Port Hedland is mostly a mining and shipping town so not really a tourist destination, but it's a practical stop if you’re heading through the Pilbara.

The scale of the port and iron ore trains is actually pretty wild to see!

Perfect for fuel, food, and staying overnight as there are hotels, caravan parks, and camping sites available.

Good to know:

  • Great turtle-spotting opportunities from Nov to Feb

  • Caravan parks and motels available, nothing fancy, but functional

  • Popular stop between Broome and Karijini or the coast

  • Mining trucks and road trains are constant, stay alert on the highways

  • Not recommended to swim in the beaches, they're more like mudflats
