Just outside of Derby, this massive old boab tree was sadly used as a holding cell for Aboriginal prisoners in the late 1800s. It’s a sobering but important stop if you're in the area.

The tree itself is huge and ancient (over 1500 years old) and surrounded by a fence to protect it. There's a short walking trail nearby with info boards that give more context to its history.

Know before going:

  • Free entry, open all year round

  • Just 7km from Derby, 2WD accessible

  • Respect the site, it’s culturally sensitive and significant
