This is one of the most memorable parts of the Gibb because it is such an iconic crossing.
The water levels change depending on when you visit.
We went in August-September and it was very dry, but if you go early in the season, it can be a massive river!
The Gibb is usually closed in the wet season to avoid dangerous conditions but it is important you are aware before going.
Most people feel apprehensive about it, because they are unsure what the water level will be when crossing. This depends on a lot of factors. If you are worried we recommend:
Check main roads at:
https://www.mainroads.wa.gov.au/travel-information/driving-in-wa/gibb-river-road/
Ringing ahead to the stations and local businesses including Derby and Kununnarra the start and end point of the Gibb to ask about known conditions eg. if there has been recent rainfall
Ring the local rangers or visitor centre at:

If you drive through it, you have to take a photo driving through it... Or else you can't keep driving the Gibb. Sorry, we don't make the rules.
