This feels totally different from the rest of the southwest and its beaches. The massive karri trees tower over the road, and the light through the canopy is beautiful. Plus if you find the right track it's a hard packed dirt road and very enjoyable to drive.

Things to do there:

• Cruise the Boranup Drive, gravel road but 2WD-friendly

• Visit Boranup Lookout for views over the forest and coast

• Stop for photos under the karri trees

• Pack a picnic, plenty of peaceful pull-over spots

• Boranup Café is a great stop for snacks, last time we checked it's open from 9 am–2:30 pm (closed Mondays)

Good to know:

• Entry is free

• No pets allowed (it's part of Leeuwin-Naturaliste NP)

• Best light is early morning or late arvo
