Trölladyngja ("Troll Shield Volcano") is one of my favourite mountains to hike on the Reykjanes peninsula. The trail isn't marked so it can be hard to explain the way to the top but I would park the car here and then start hiking south. Just know that you should never have to do anything dangerous so if you feel you're in a sketchy spot, you're probably off track.

• What it is: A mountain in Reykjanes with great views.

• Best season: Summer.

• Best time of day: Any but sunset up there is beautiful.
