If you visit Velika Planina you’ll be on a high alpine pasture at about 1,600 m known for its wooden herdsmen huts and grazing cattle, so plan for open, windy weather and great photo ops. The fastest way up is the seasonal cable car from the valley, or you can hike up in roughly 1.5-3 hours depending on your route; check the cable car schedule before you go. Wear layers and sturdy shoes, bring sun protection and a light rain shell, and carry some cash because small huts selling cheese and snacks may not take cards. Trails between hut clusters are easy to moderate and family friendly, but it gets busy on summer weekends, so arrive early if you want quieter paths and a table in a mountain hut.
The main shepherd's settlement is a great photographic experience due to its traditional wooden architecture. The most beautiful time to visit is in April when the snow is gone and the crocus flowers bloom in the pastures.
