“After just a couple of hours, I always see the same thing - guests’ shoulders drop as they finally let go, feel the calm settle in their bodies, and allow the island atmosphere to take over,” says Gitte, the owner of Avernakø Landhotel. And we can only agree, as we experienced it ourselves - two mothers and boys aged five on a stay in May 2026.
Just 1.3 kilometres from the ferry harbour, you’ll first pass a playground on one side and a large football field on the other. A little further up the road lies the landhotel. A small, homely island hotel with simple, pleasant rooms, a large garden filled with tables and chairs for relaxing, dining, and chatting with animals, as well as an old classroom where several of our meals were served. Because this building was once the island’s school, and I love that details like the wooden wall bars and the green chalkboard have been preserved. Another thing that truly stands out is that the hotel stays open all year round.
By bike? Most guests arrive on Avernakø on foot or by bicycle, which I can highly recommend. There are several free long-term parking areas in Faaborg near the ferry harbour (see here). We brought the children’s bikes from home to make sure they had the right size (there are also a few children’s bikes available for rent on the island), while we adults rented bikes locally.
