In the heart of Tunø, in buildings dating back to around 1880, you’ll find the charming yellow island hotel Blåkærgård - just a 30-minute walk from the ferry harbour. From the moment you arrive, you feel the warmth of Cecillie’s hospitality and see it reflected in her newly renovated rooms, filled with beautiful, thoughtful details.

Blåkærgård is truly the place to be whether you’re simply stopping by for a slice of Danish lemon cake and a glass of juice after a hike around Tunø, or sitting down for a delicious, crispy homemade pizza in the evening. And of course, you can choose the full experience with an overnight stay including breakfast.

The children instantly found board games and claimed the large lawn for ball games, while we parents soaked in the soft evening colours with a chilled glass of white wine on the cosy terrace.

It’s also possible to rent the entire Blåkærgård for island weddings, birthdays and other celebrations. From time to time, yoga retreats are hosted here as well (see their website for updates).

Blåkærgård (Cecillie’s) best insider tips:

🌅 The views from the cliffs at Sønderklint and Nørreklint are truly something special. At Nørreklint, you’ll find rich birdlife - including species such as the black guillemot and Denmark’s largest colony of the rare little auk, both nesting in the cliffs from April to July.

The birdwatching tower is also worth a visit. And if the church tower is open, climb to the top for the view. It also serves as a lighthouse, the only church tower in Denmark with that dual function. Entrance fee: 5-10 DKK.

🌊 Tunø is surrounded by the clearest, most wonderful water. My favourite spot is Nordstranden, with its clear water, sandy seabed and peaceful beach that you can often have almost entirely to yourself - even in high summer. Or take an evening dip from the bathing jetty at Stenkalven, where the sunsets are simply spectacular.

🧑‍🍳 The many roadside stalls sell delicious, freshly harvested Tunø vegetables. The potatoes are in a league of their own. Bring home a jar of local Tunø honey, collected exclusively by bees on the island. And keep an eye on the new harbour restaurant, Røgeriet. New leaseholders arrived in 2025, and they have exciting plans in the making for the 2026 season.

🥾 The walk through the forest from Blåkærgård to Nordstranden (about 10 minutes) is absolutely wonderful - a magical little woodland, wild and lush. Bring your swimwear… just in case.

For a longer adventure, walk “Tunø Rundt” (Tunø All the Way Around). If you answer the treasure hunt questions correctly along the route, you’ll even earn a medal. You can get your treasure map on the ferry or at the local shop - or print it at home before you arrive.

☔️ On rainy days, head to the café at Blåkærgård for board games and warmth from the wood-burning stove. There are plenty of games, delicious lunches, hot coffee or cocoa, and homemade cakes. The perfect cosy pause while you wait for the weather to turn again.
