A natural hot pool tucked deep in the bush—and you won’t believe how easy it is to get there.
On Great Barrier Island, a peaceful 40-minute walk through lush forest leads you to Kaitoke Hot Springs, a free, natural geothermal soak spot surrounded by nikau palms, birdsong, and total stillness.
The hot springs are fed by warm, mineral-rich water rising from beneath the island. The main pool fits around six people, with temps that vary slightly depending where you sit—just enough to find your perfect soak. Shaded by trees, it's ideal even on sunny days. For a bonus view, follow the trail just 5 minutes uphill to a small lookout with sweeping views over Kaitoke Swamp and the island's forested ridges.
How to get there:
🚶♀️ Start at Kaitoke Hot Springs Track trailhead, located off Whangaparapara Road. It’s well signposted and has a small parking area nearby.
🕒 Walking time: About 40 minutes one way (1.5 hours return), easy grade.
🌳 The track is well maintained, wide and mostly flat—suitable for push-chairs and kids. You’ll pass through regenerating bush, boardwalks over wetlands, and small stream crossings (with bridges).
Need-to-knows:
💧 Free to soak
🛁 No changing rooms or toilets at the springs
🧴 Bring water, snacks, and a towel—there are no shops nearby
♨️ Temperature ranges from warm to hot depending where you sit
Tips:
Wear sandals or shoes you don’t mind getting wet
Bug spray can be helpful, especially in warmer months
Always check current DOC track conditions before heading out, especially after heavy rain.
Do not submerge your head in the water
Keep a close eye on young children—there’s no fencing
