One of the easiest walking tracks in Northland (just 5minutes) that gives a good introduction to our typical native forest

The Manginangina Kauri Walk in Puketi Forest is a short and easy stroll that will leave you in awe of the majestic hundred year old kauri trees towering above. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the boardwalk through the lush forest, with interpretive panels to help you appreciate the unique ecosystem. Don't forget to scrub your shoes clean to protect the precious kauri trees from disease! Just follow the signs off State Highway 10 and get ready to be amazed by nature's giants.

⏱️ ~15 min return, 350 m total

🥾 Easy – flat, boardwalk surface suitable for all ages and abilities

🚗 Parking at Puketi Recreation Area via Pungaere/Waiare Road

🚫 No dogs (conservation area)

🚻 Toilets and parking at trailhead

🧼 Cleaning station at entry to prevent kauri dieback

Tips:

  • If you go walking in the evening, you may be treated to a display from the local glow-worms when you get to the first of the track's boardwalks.

  • Bring a raincoat—Puketi gets its fair share of drizzle, and it makes the forest glow

  • Pair it with the nearby Puketi Nature Trail (1.6 km loop, ~1 hr with glow-worms at dusk)

  • Don’t wander off boardwalk—keeping kauri roots safe is vital
