Waterfall / kauri loop track! 30mins return to the waterfall viewpoint & 1 - 1.5hrs hours return loop track (3km).
The highest waterfall in Northland, 46 metes Taheke Falls is found in Taheke Reserve, 20 minutes' drive away from Whangarei. The waterfall's top can be viewed from a wooden platform.
The Taheke Waterfall Track near Whangarei, Northland, New Zealand is a short and easy loop walk that takes you through regenerating kauri forest to a beautiful viewpoint of the waterfall. The trail is well-maintained and signposted, making it a great option for a relaxed hike in nature. Plus, you're unlikely to run into many other people along the way, so you can enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Just remember to leave your furry friends at home, as dogs aren't allowed on this trail.
Note: Unfortunately, a side track to the lower viewing platform has been closed permanently due to Kauri dieback, so the lower waterfall can't be seen anymore. (photo of that view is credited to Hilton Ward via waterfalls.co.nz)
From a reviewer:
'You can get to the bottom of the waterfall. For this you need to be extremely fit and stupidly determined. Follow the loop trail. The descent path starts just behind that tree with the yellow tape to the right. It's very steep and even has the abseil rope down at the finish section of the slope. Then make your way through the bush, hop along the river rocks and finally enjoy the splash. It's worth it! The place is wild. Not a soul so it's all yours to have fun.'
'A rather pleasant well maintained trails with many many steps to assist with the uphills/downhills on this short trail that provides a lovely feel of New Zealand wilderness'
