The Pantheon is a MUST-see spot when you visit Rome! While I have visited the Pantheon in the past, my mind was blown after taking a guided tour. The line-ups can be crazy and confusing, and on-site tickets sell out! Booking a tour ensures you can visit when you want. And you'll learn a lot!
The Pantheon you see today is the third one built and an architectural masterpiece. It has survived barbarian lootings, earthquakes, and the wear and tear of nearly 2000 years!
The Pantheon was built as an ancient Roman temple. The 16 massive columns holding up the portico are each made from a single piece of granite quarried and shipped from Egypt! The Pantheon has the world’s largest dome of unreinforced concrete and is an architectural masterpiece! The concrete of ancient Rome was super resilient due to a blend of limestone and volcanic ash, which prevented cracking and made it water resistant.
The Pantheon survived to this day because it was converted into a Catholic church, so it wasn't looted like other ancient monuments. Today, it is officially called the Church of St. Mary and the Martyrs.
