We started our hike from the Asahidake Ropeway Station, which quickly brought us up to the Sugatami Station, where the real adventure began. The hike took us through beautiful flower fields, and we passed several volcanic vents that reminded us of the mountain's active status. The climb became steeper as we approached the summit, making the final push both challenging and exhilarating. The entire hike, including our time at the summit, took about five hours roundtrip.

By Car:
Drive to Asahidake Onsen and park near the Asahidake Ropeway Station.

By Public Transport:
Take a bus from Asahikawa Station to Asahidake Onsen, then take the ropeway up to Sugatami Station.

Asahidake, standing at 2,291 meters, is Hokkaido’s tallest mountain and an active stratovolcano. The trail begins at Sugatami Station, where the Asahidake Ropeway drops you off, and leads through stunning alpine flower fields, bubbling volcanic vents, and rocky terrain to the summit.

A highlight of the hike is passing Sugatami Pond, where the mountain’s peak and the steam vents are beautifully reflected on calm days. As you ascend, the trail becomes steeper, offering both a physical and mental challenge.

Asahidake is culturally significant, known to the Ainu people as Kamui-mintara, or "the playground of the gods," and the views from the summit certainly feel divine. The trail also provides a unique opportunity to witness the volcanic activity up close, with steam rising from vents as you hike.

This hike is part of Daisetsuzan National Park, one of Japan’s largest and most pristine natural areas, known for its alpine landscapes, diverse wildlife, and year-round beauty.
