The Kamuiwakka River on the Shiretoko Peninsula is famous for its hot waterfalls and naturally warm waters. Hiking up this heated river offers one of Japan's most unique hot spring experiences.

Before visiting, you need to watch a preparatory video and bring proper equipment. Helmets are mandatory and provided for free at the trailhead. Aqua shoes, recommended for climbing, can be rented at the Shiretoko Nature Center.

Expect to get wet up to your knees. Many visitors wear bathing suits to enjoy the natural pools along the river. Note that the large pool at the fourth waterfall no longer exists due to rockfall.

The season to visit Kamuiwakka River is limited to summer and early autumn (July 1 to September 30, 2024). Advance reservations are required and can be made online. The admission fee is 2200 yen per person.

Getting There

A ten-kilometer dirt road connects the Shiretoko Five Lakes to the trailhead. This road is open from early summer to late autumn.

By Car/Motorcycle: Access is available from May 31 to October 1, except August 9-18 when shuttle buses replace car access between the Shiretoko Five Lakes and the trailhead.

By Bus: Shuttle buses run from August 9-18, 2024, taking about 45 minutes. The total cost, including the admission fee, is 3000 yen per person.

By Bicycle/Foot: The road can be used by cyclists and pedestrians from May 31 to October 1. However, it takes 2-3 hours to walk from the Shiretoko Five Lakes to the trailhead.
