Senjojiki Cirque offers one of the easiest access points to breathtaking Japan Alps scenery, thanks to its year-round ropeway. I’ve visited in every season—spring, summer, autumn, and winter—and each time it feels like a completely new place. The stunning views make it worth the journey, though it can be expensive and time-consuming due to the shuttle bus and ropeway required. It's a popular spot, so I highly recommend staying overnight at Hotel Senjojiki to fully enjoy the experience.

Accessibility & How to Get to the Trailhead:

  • By Car: I usually drive and park at the Suganodai Bus Center before taking the shuttle and then the ropeway to the cirque. Be aware that if you're visiting during autumn, especially on weekends, the lines can stretch for up to two hours. To avoid this, I recommend visiting on weekdays or during other seasons when it's less crowded.

  • By Public Transport: Take a bus from Komagane Station to the ropeway (Full Guide)
    Highway Bus from Shinjuku

Accommodation:

  • Hotel Senjojiki: Located right at the top of the ropeway, perfect for an early start.

Hike Details:

  • Beginner-Friendly Loop: A 45-minute, easy loop trail around the cirque offers stunning views of alpine flowers and dramatic landscapes, perfect for beginners and casual hikers.

  • Hoken and Kisokomagatake Route: For more advanced hikers, a challenging full-day route leads to Mount Hoken (2,931m) and Kisokomagatake (2,956m). The route includes rocky sections and steep ascents, but rewards hikers with incredible panoramic views of the Central Alps.
