Arashiyama is a beautiful scenic area on the western edge of Kyoto, and one of my favourite places for its natural surroundings and slightly rural feel — especially considering how close it is to the city.
That said, it’s true that Arashiyama has become very popular with tourists, and these days it’s not always the calm, quiet escape it once was. During the middle of the day, the main streets and bamboo grove can feel crowded.
Even so, there are still moments here that feel special. The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is undeniably beautiful, especially if you visit early in the morning before the crowds arrive. Walking along the river is another highlight — the area around the water has a more relaxed atmosphere, where you can slow down and enjoy the scenery.
For a different way to explore, riding a traditional rickshaw is also a fun option. It lets you see the area at a gentler pace while learning a bit about Arashiyama from a local guide.
If you time your visit well and manage expectations, Arashiyama can still be a lovely place to experience Kyoto’s natural side.
Tip: Visit early in the morning or on a weekday for the most peaceful experience.
