Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion, is one of Kyoto’s most iconic temples and truly unforgettable once you see it in person.
A temple completely covered in gold leaf is rare, and the way it reflects on the surrounding pond feels almost unreal.
The temple grounds are designed as a one-way walking route, allowing you to enjoy the pavilion from different angles as you move through the gardens. No matter the season, the view is impressive — but for me, the most memorable visit was in winter, when I saw Kinkaku-ji covered in fresh snow. The contrast between the white snow, the gold temple, and the quiet surroundings was absolutely breathtaking.
Even though it’s one of Kyoto’s most famous spots, it still manages to feel special, especially if you visit earlier in the day when it’s calmer.
Tip: Winter visits are rare but magical if you’re lucky with snowfall. Otherwise, go early in the morning to avoid the biggest crowds.
