Tucked away near Takaka in Golden Bay, the Grove Scenic Reserve feels like stepping into a natural cathedral. Towering limestone outcrops rise dramatically out of the forest, their sheer walls draped in native ferns, nikau palms, and twisted trees that cling to every crevice. Walking through the narrow passages between the rocks feels otherworldly—like nature has carved out its own secret pathways and hidden chambers.
The reserve is easily reached via a short, flat walking track that begins from a small carpark just outside of Takaka. In only 10–15 minutes you’ll find yourself at a wooden platform offering sweeping views over Golden Bay. Along the way, the track winds through dense native bush and beneath massive boulders, giving a sense of both intimacy and grandeur.
It’s an incredible spot for photography—wide-angle lenses are perfect for capturing the scale of the cliffs and forest canopy, while a zoom will let you pick out the textures of moss and the play of light filtering through the leaves. Early morning or late afternoon light makes the reserve feel especially magical.
