Mount Temple

Mount Temple is not just a hike — it’s a full-day commitment and easily one of the most demanding objectives in the Lake Louise area.

This was my second hardest hike in the valley, and I’m not exaggerating when I say it completely wiped me out. It took us about 11.5 hours total, and we were barely making it back in time for the last shuttle. My legs were shaking so badly at the end that I could barely stand still afterwards.

Stats:
• Distance: ~16 km round trip
• Elevation gain: ~1,700 m
• Time: 7–12 hours (we took 11.5)
• Difficulty: Hard / strenuous scramble
• Starting point: Moraine Lake (shuttle access only)

The adventure starts from Moraine Lake and follows the Larch Valley trail up toward Sentinel Pass. That section is actually beautiful — larch forests, wide-open views, and a steady climb that almost tricks you into thinking it’s manageable.

Once you pass Sentinel Pass, everything changes.

The trail turns into steep, loose scree and exposed rock, and this is where Mount Temple really begins. You’ll be using your hands, navigating rock bands, and constantly watching your footing. It’s physically demanding, but also mentally exhausting.

There are sections where every step forward slides back a bit — and on the way down, when your legs are already done, it’s even tougher. This is where a lot of people underestimate it.

The summit, though, is unreal. You’re standing above Moraine Lake, surrounded by glaciers and endless peaks — one of the biggest, most rewarding views in the Rockies.

But this is not for the faint-hearted.

You need solid fitness, scrambling experience, and good conditions. Weather can change quickly, and there’s exposure the higher you go.

You’ll also need a Banff National Park pass, and timing your day around the Moraine Lake shuttle is crucial — missing it after a day like this is not something you want to deal with.

This is one of those hikes you respect more than you enjoy in the moment… but afterwards, it’s unforgettable.
