Vista Lake is one of those quick stops that turns into a surprisingly rewarding little adventure.

Located right off Highway 93 (Banff–Radium road) at Vermilion Pass, it’s about 40 minutes from Banff, and easy to miss if you’re not looking for it.

The trail starts right from the roadside and immediately drops down a short but steep descent (about 1 km one way), taking roughly 20–30 minutes to reach the lake.

At the bottom, you’re met with that deep emerald water, often much quieter than other lakes in Banff, with Storm Mountain rising in the background. It’s a great spot to hang out, have a snack, or just enjoy a more peaceful lake experience without the crowds.

If you want to turn it into something bigger, this trail actually connects into the Shadow Lake / Shadow Lake Lodge route, which continues deep into the backcountry. That longer route is a full-day or overnight trip, eventually leading you to Shadow Lake Lodge — a remote backcountry lodge surrounded by alpine scenery.

Just keep in mind: that easy walk down means a solid climb back up, which definitely gets your heart going on the return. It’s short, a bit steep, and very worth it if you want something a little more low-key and local-feeling.
