Step into a real-life postcard at Maligne Lake, one of the most iconic and scenic lakes in the Canadian Rockies. Located about 45 km (roughly a 1-hour drive) from the town of Jasper along the Maligne Lake Road, the drive alone is part of the experience, with chances to spot wildlife and stops like Maligne Canyon along the way.
The lake itself is the largest natural lake in the Canadian Rockies, stretching over 22 km, with that signature deep turquoise water surrounded by towering peaks.
The must-do here is the boat cruise to Spirit Island, which takes you across the lake to one of the most photographed spots in Canada. It’s a relaxed ride (around 1.5–2 hours total), and once you arrive, you get time to walk to the famous viewpoint — and yes, it really is that beautiful.
If you’re not doing the boat tour, there are still great ways to explore the area. You can walk the Mary Schäffer Loop(easy, scenic loop right by the shoreline), rent a canoe, or just take in the views from the lakeside. It’s super accessible, but still feels wild and remote because of the scale of the landscape.
Whether you go for the iconic boat ride or just spend some time by the water, this is one of those places in Jasper that really stands out — you just need to plan a bit of time for the drive to get there.
