Just a short drive from Canmore, the hike to the Heart Creek Bunker is one of the more unique and unexpected adventures in the area.
The trail itself is a family-friendly 4 km round trip, starting with an easy forest walk before a slightly steeper final climb up to the cave entrance. But what makes this place special isn’t just the hike — it’s what’s hidden inside.
The bunker dates back to the Cold War era and was originally built as a secure storage and potential command site, designed to protect important resources and equipment in case of a nuclear threat.
Today, what remains is a large, man-made cavern carved into the mountain — and it’s surprisingly big once you step inside. It’s dark, a bit eerie, and definitely different from anything else you’ll find in the Rockies.
Make sure to bring a flashlight or headlamp, as there’s no lighting inside, and wear good shoes since it can be uneven and damp.
It’s not a long or overly challenging hike, but the payoff is something completely unexpected — part history, part adventure, and a cool little hidden spot most people don’t know about.
Don’t forget a Kcountry park pass.
