A rewarding backcountry adventure near Invermere, Pedley Pass is a beautiful hike that leads through forest, past an alpine tarn, and up to a scenic mountain pass with wide-open views of the surrounding Rockies. The hike is roughly 11–12 km round trip (about 7 miles) with approximately 750–800 m (2,400–2,600 ft) of elevation gain, and most hikers take 4–6 hours to complete it depending on pace and how long they spend enjoying the views.

The trail is located in the mountains west of Invermere, with the hike starting near the Pedley Pass trailhead off Westside Road, which runs along the west side of Lake Windermere. Getting to the trailhead involves driving a long forestry road, and the final section can be rough and rocky, so a high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended. After rain the road can become quite rutted, making the approach part of the adventure.

From the trailhead the path climbs steadily through forest before opening up into alpine terrain where you’ll reach a small alpine tarn beneath the surrounding peaks. From here the trail continues up to Pedley Pass, where the landscape opens dramatically with sweeping views over the Purcell Mountains and the Columbia Valley. Adventurous hikers can continue onto the ridge above the pass, which offers incredible panoramic views of the surrounding backcountry.

Because the hike sits in a quieter part of the Rockies compared to places like Banff or Lake Louise, it often feels wonderfully peaceful and wild. With the rugged access road, alpine scenery, and rewarding views from the pass, Pedley Pass is a fantastic day hike for those exploring the Invermere and Columbia Valley area who want a beautiful mountain adventure away from the crowds.
