West Coast Day Trip – Dramatic Cliffs & Endless Ocean
The west coast of Madeira is raw and rugged – towering sea cliffs, quiet fishing villages, and some of the most photogenic viewpoints on the island. Compared to the lush north, the west feels drier and more exposed, with dramatic rock formations dropping straight into the Atlantic.
This route takes you through hidden bays, secret miradouros, and epic lava pools. It’s a must if you’ve already explored the north and want another side of Madeira’s wild coastline.
Key Stops
Cabo Girão Skywalk
One of Europe’s highest sea cliffs (589 m) with a glass-floored skywalk. Overhyped midday – but sunrise or sunset here is insane. Views stretch from Câmara de Lobos to the Desertas Islands.
Câmara de Lobos Promenade
Colorful fishing village famous for Winston Churchill’s paintings. Great for a poncha stop (try Taberna do Capitão) and seafood lunch.
Calheta Beach
Artificial golden sand beach – perfect chill break if you want to swim in calm waters (rare on Madeira’s rocky coast).
Jardim do Mar & Paul do Mar
Surf villages with chill promenade walks and cafés right on the ocean. Paul do Mar sunsets are legendary – locals grab poncha at Maktub Pub.
Achadas da Cruz Cable Car
Steepest cable car on Madeira, dropping to a remote fajã with crumbling stone houses and vegetable plots. Feels frozen in time. Great for photos and quick coastal walks.
Miradouro da Ponta da Ladeira
Cliff-edge viewpoint near Achadas da Cruz with massive views over the west coast cliffs. Quiet alternative to Cabo Girão.
Ponta do Pargo Lighthouse (Farol da Ponta do Pargo)
Westernmost tip of Madeira; endless ocean views, sheer cliffs, and epic sunsets. Small museum inside lighthouse about Madeira’s maritime history.
Bica da Cana Viewpoint (optional detour)
Above Paul da Serra plateau; cloud waterfalls spill down the cliffs here. Epic at sunrise or after stormy nights.
Lagoa do Lugar de Baixo (optional stop)
Birdwatching lagoon near Ponta do Sol; great quick stop for photographers.
Insider Tips
Do it counterclockwise: Start via Câmara de Lobos, loop west through Paul do Mar, finish at Ponta do Pargo for sunset.
Bring snacks/water: Limited food options between Calheta and Ponta do Pargo.
Sunset plan: Best at Ponta do Pargo lighthouse or Paul do Mar promenade with a poncha in hand.
Skip the highway: Follow the coastal roads (ER101) for waterfalls, tunnels, and cliffside views.
Combine with levada stops: Levada do Alecrim or 25 Fontes can be added to turn this into a full hike + coast day.

For those who want more context…
"The west coast remained cut off for centuries – steep mountains and wild Atlantic swells kept it isolated until modern tunnels were carved into the rock. Even now, it feels remote and authentic: fishing villages where time moves slower, endless sunsets, and cliffs so high they make you dizzy. This is where you come when you want space, ocean air, and raw Madeira."
