Val di Funes, known in German as Villnöss, is one of the most picturesque valleys in the entire Dolomites. Famous for its traditional alpine villages, rolling meadows, wooden farmhouses, and the dramatic Odle Peaks (Geislergruppe), this valley offers some of the most iconic landscapes in Northern Italy.

Many of the photographs that made the Dolomites famous worldwide were taken right here.

Why Visit Val di Funes?

Unlike many other destinations in the Dolomites, Val di Funes is not about a single attraction. The beauty of the valley comes from the combination of:

  • traditional alpine villages;

  • peaceful mountain meadows;

  • panoramic roads;

  • scenic hiking trails;

  • and breathtaking views of the Odle Peaks (Geislergruppe).

It's one of the few places where simply driving through the valley can be just as rewarding as completing a hike.

Highlights of the Valley

Some of the most famous locations in Val di Funes include:

If you're visiting the Dolomites for the first time, I highly recommend dedicating at least one full day to exploring this valley.

Best Time to Visit

Summer

The meadows are bright green, the hiking trails are fully accessible, and the contrast between the landscape and the mountains is at its best.

Autumn

My favorite season in Val di Funes.

The forests begin turning golden, the air becomes crystal clear, and the valley is often much quieter than during peak summer.

Winter

Snow transforms the valley into one of the most beautiful winter landscapes in the Dolomites. The iconic churches and farmhouses look especially magical after fresh snowfall.

Photography

Val di Funes is a paradise for photographers.

Some of the most famous Dolomite images were captured here, but don't limit yourself to the classic viewpoints.

Many of my favorite moments in the valley happened while simply exploring side roads, hiking trails, and quiet corners away from the main attractions.

Best photography conditions:

  • sunrise;

  • sunset;

  • autumn colors;

  • fresh snow;

  • foggy mornings.

Hiking Opportunities

The valley offers hiking options for every fitness level.

You can choose between:

  • easy walks through meadows;

  • scenic panoramic trails;

  • mountain hut hikes;

  • full-day adventures into the Odle Mountains (Geislergruppe).

One of the biggest advantages of Val di Funes is that even relatively short hikes often provide incredible views.

Practical Tips

  • Start early if you want the best photography conditions

  • Stay at least one night in the valley if possible

  • Bring cash for smaller mountain huts

  • Weather changes quickly in the mountains

  • Don't rush between viewpoints — the scenery between the famous spots is often just as beautiful

My Recommendation

If I had to choose only one valley to visit in the Dolomites, Val di Funes would be very close to the top of the list.

The combination of traditional alpine culture, iconic mountain scenery, easy accessibility, and fantastic hiking opportunities makes it one of the most complete destinations in the entire region.

Whether you're a photographer, hiker, or simply exploring the Dolomites by car, Val di Funes is a place you'll remember long after your trip is over.
