Ilomantsi Battlegrounds Trail – A Journey Through Ilomantsi’s History

Ilomantsi is a place deeply rooted in war history, and we decided to explore it the best way we could—by driving the Sotatie (War Trail). The route includes 28 historical sites, and we stopped at about 20 of them. And let me tell you—it was worth every stop!

Following the War Trail gave us a powerful and vivid experience of history. It wasn’t just reading from a book—it was standing right where things happened. That made all the difference. The kids had tons of questions, and the stories came alive in a whole new way. Some of the stops were incredibly moving, others surprising, and all of them eye-opening.

A fun part? We bumped into the same people at multiple spots over the course of two days—along the War Trail, in Ilomantsi town, and even at Parppeinpirtti! It was like we were part of an unofficial little travel community, sharing smiles and nods at each stop.

By the end of our historical deep dive, the kids were definitely ready for a swim and a game of pesäpallo—we packed in enough learning to match a week of history lessons. Highly recommend the War Road if you want to truly feel the past.
