Sweden’s wildest scenic route
The Vildmarksvägen, also known as The Wilderness Road, is one of Sweden’s most breathtaking road trips. Stretching through the heart of the north, this route takes you from deep forests and quiet lakes to vast mountain plateaus and dramatic waterfalls. It’s the kind of roadtrip where you can stop, breathe in the fresh air, and feel truly connected to the wild landscapes around you.
I drove the Vildmarksvägen in three days, but it can easily be adapted to your own pace. If you’d like to spend more time hiking, exploring, or simply soaking in the silence of the north, I highly recommend adding extra days. You can also reverse this itinerary, the route is equally beautiful in both directions.
Along the way, you’ll pass through charming Swedish villages, cross the dramatic Stekenjokk Plateau, and visit some of the country’s photogenic waterfalls. Day 3, in particular, is packed with them, most are just a short walk away and perfect to combine with other sights.
A Note on Camping
While wild camping is allowed along the route, I found it a bit challenging to locate good spots close to the main road. Because of that, I’ve included the campsites where I stayed during my trip. I brought my own tent, which made it easy to set up at campgrounds each evening after a long day of exploring.
If you’re traveling by camper or van, finding a suitable wild camping spot is often easier. However, if you prefer staying at official campsites with your camper, it’s recommended to prebook, especially during the summer months when the route is popular with travelers.
Seasonal Access
Keep in mind that the mountain pass through Stekenjokk is only open from June 6 to October 15, depending on snowfall. Outside this period, snow can make the road impassable. Other parts of the Vildmarksvägen remain accessible for most of the year, though conditions can vary, especially in early spring or late autumn.
