Mount Adatara, part of the Azuma Mountain Range in Fukushima Prefecture, is known for its stunning volcanic landscape and geothermal activity. I always take the ropeway as the hike up is not as enjoyable as the loop you can do once you are up at the plateau.

Trailhead: The primary trailhead for hiking Mount Adatara is located at Adatara Ropeway Station. The ropeway offers an easy ascent partway up the mountain, making it accessible for beginners.

How to Get There:

  • By Car: Drive to the Adatara Ropeway parking lot. The area has ample parking and is well-marked for visitors.

  • By Public Transport: Take a train to Nihonmatsu Station (JR Tohoku Line) and then a 30-minute bus ride to the Adatara Ropeway.

Hike Details:

  • Distance: Approximately 6 km round-trip from the upper ropeway station to the summit.

  • Duration: 3 to 4 hours

  • Incline: Roughly 500 meters

  • Difficulty: Easy

General Information & Highlights:

  • Summit Views: The peak of Mount Adatara offers panoramic views, including the Pacific Ocean to the east and Mount Bandai to the west.

  • Nakadake Crater: A unique feature of the hike is the steaming Nakadake Crater, located along the route. The volcanic activity adds an exciting and dramatic atmosphere to the hike.

  • Numajiri Onsen: After the hike, you can relax in the natural hot springs of Numajiri Onsen, a short distance away from the mountain.

Accommodation:

  • Adatara Kogen Hotel: A good choice, offering comfortable rooms and access to onsen baths, perfect for unwinding after your hike.

Additional Tips:

  • The best time to hike Mount Adatara is from spring to autumn (mid-May to early November). In winter, the trails are covered in snow, and the area becomes a destination for winter sports.

  • Bring proper hiking gear, including a jacket, as the weather can change rapidly at the summit (when I visited in October, the wind was very strong and chilly)
