This is the easiest trail from Kamikochi to a scenic point. The trail is relatively flat, following the river through lush forests and passing several beautiful viewpoints, including the Hotaka mountain range and the crystal-clear Azusa River. Myojin Pond, the destination of this hike, is a revered spot with tranquil waters and a small Shinto shrine. It’s the perfect place to pause, take in the scenery, and enjoy a quiet moment of reflection. There is a small admission fee so I would carry a bit of change.

Trailhead: Kappabashi Bridge, Kamikochi

Route Description

  • Distance: 6 km round trip

  • Elevation Gain: Minimal

  • Time Required: 2-3 hours round trip

  • Difficulty: Easy, suitable for all levels

  1. Starting at Kappabashi Bridge: Begin at the famous Kappabashi Bridge in Kamikochi. Take a moment to enjoy the views of the Hotaka mountain range and the turquoise Azusa River below.

  2. Along the Azusa River: Head north along the well-marked riverside trail toward Myojin Pond. The trail is shaded by dense forest, keeping the path cool and scenic, with occasional views of the surrounding mountains.

  3. Dakesawa Marsh and Tashiro Bridge: About halfway to Myojin Pond, you’ll pass Dakesawa Marsh, a picturesque area that offers great photo opportunities. Continue over Tashiro Bridge as you get closer to Myojin Pond.

  4. Arriving at Myojin Pond: After around an hour or so of gentle walking, you’ll reach Myojin Pond. Here, you’ll find Hotaka Shrine, a small but beautiful Shinto shrine overlooking the pond. The area is serene and is said to be a spiritual power spot. Take time to relax, enjoy the quiet atmosphere, and explore the area.
