Aare Gorge (Aareschlucht)
The Aare Gorge is a narrow canyon carved by the Aare River, with turquoise water rushing below and dramatic rock walls rising on either side. For a small entrance fee, you can explore it on a safe walkway built right into the cliffs—a unique experience that’s both easy and exciting for kids.
The walk: About 1.6 km (30 minutes one way). You can walk back the same route, or if using public transport, enter at one side and exit at the other—train stations are just steps from both entrances.
For kids: Look for the gorge’s mascot, a dragon, hidden along the walls. At the west entrance, there’s also a great playground to reward kids after the walk.
When to go: Perfect for a cloudy or rainy day, since the fun is all about the gorge itself—not mountain views.
Extras: Combine your visit with the nearby Reichenbach Falls (famous from Sherlock Holmes), just a 2-minute drive or 20-minute walk away.
