If you’re visiting Neuschwanstein, don’t skip its neighbor, Hohenschwangau Castle—the childhood home of King Ludwig II (the dreamer behind Neuschwanstein). This yellow castle tucked into the Bavarian Alps looks straight out of a storybook and ended up being one of our favorite stops in Southern Germany.
Inside, families can join a guided tour (the only way to visit) and see rooms decorated with colorful murals of knights, legends, and fairy tales that feel like stepping into a bedtime story. The tour is short enough to keep kids engaged while still giving you plenty of history.
✨ Family Tips for Visiting:
🎟 Tickets: About €21 per adult, €5 for kids (under 18). Family tickets are available and a good deal.
🚶 Getting There: Be ready for a 20-minute uphill walk from the village—strollers aren’t great on the cobblestones, so a baby carrier is easiest.
⏱ Tours: They run at set times, so book tickets in advance to avoid long waits (and meltdowns).
📷 Photos: No pictures allowed inside, but the castle grounds and surrounding views are beautiful for family snapshots.
🧺 Nearby: Pack snacks or grab lunch in the village at the bottom—there’s plenty of casual, family-friendly food.
Between the fairy-tale setting and the peek into royal life, Hohenschwangau is a magical experience kids and parents will both love!
