This 15-day Peru itinerary follows a thoughtfully designed route through Lima, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Cusco, and the Peruvian Amazon, balancing Peru’s most iconic destinations with a pace that allows you to fully experience each region.
The journey begins in Lima, Peru’s vibrant culinary capital, before continuing into the Andes to the Sacred Valley. Spending several days in the Sacred Valley allows time to acclimate to the altitude while exploring ancient Inca ruins, traditional markets, and dramatic mountain landscapes before visiting Machu Picchu.
From the Sacred Valley, travel by train through the Urubamba River Valley aboard the PeruRail Vistadome, known for its large windows that showcase the spectacular scenery along the route.
After arriving in Aguas Calientes, you’ll head up to Machu Picchu for your first visit that afternoon. Experiencing the citadel later in the day often means fewer crowds and beautiful afternoon light over the surrounding mountains.
You’ll spend the night in Aguas Calientes and return to Machu Picchu early the following morning for a second visit. Seeing the site at different times of day offers a completely different perspective and allows you to explore more of the archaeological complex at a relaxed pace.
